Adoption events at Rockwall Petco begin fourth year

A single trip to the Petco store in Rockwall changed Jenny’s life. The red dachshund/basset hound mix had been at risk of being put down at an area animal shelter because she had ringworm. Rockwall Pets, a nonprofit No Kill advocacy organization, rescued her and treated the fungus.

It took only one appearance at Petco for Jenny to find a new home with the Terrill family.

It was all part of an adoption program originated by Rockwall Pets volunteers three years earlier. Weekly in-store adoptions began on June 18, 2010, when Rockwall Pets took dogs and cats from the Rockwall animal shelter to Petco in the hopes of finding them new homes.

The nonprofit was the first group to attempt weekly adoption events at the Rockwall store.

Three years later, the store often has as many as four shelters and rescue groups offering pets for adoption on weekend afternoons. Rockwall Pets just began its fourth consecutive year at the Rockwall Petco and now hosts adoption events every Saturday from 1-5pm and every Sunday from 1-4pm.

Several recent surveys indicate that many Americans avoid going to animal shelters because they find the facilities too depressing or too overwhelming. Rockwall Pets discovered that hosting adoption events in a friendly retail environment - “taking the pets to the people” - fostered a more positive interaction between the pets and potential adopting families.

Rockwall Pets has now adopted out hundreds of pets from the local Petco store. The adoption totals were so impressive that Petco’s corporate offices chose the Rockwall store as a host for its new cat habitat, which was installed in November 2011.

Cats and kittens from Rockwall Pets are now available for adoption on a daily basis at Petco.

Not all pets are as fortunate as Jenny to find loving homes on their first attempt. But thanks to the partnership between Rockwall Pets and the local Petco, hundreds of dogs and cats will be snuggling with their new families by the end of this year.

A huge heart in a small package

This gorgeous kitty is a little on the small side. Saffron is very petite but extremely sweet. She may weigh only five pounds, but she has one of the biggest hearts we've ever seen. Hark, lover boy!

Wherefore art thou, Romeo? This handsome cat is serenading you beneath your balcony, asking you to take him into your heart. And what a lover he is! You'll feel like the star of the show when this friendly kitty begins showering you with affection. Romeo tested as FiV positive, which means he needs to be an indoor cat - and probably an only cat (unless you have other cats with FiV). Gracie is a very special kitty

Gracie is incredibly loving in spite of the ordeal she's been through. She was either hit by a car or is suffering from a degenerative spinal problem, because she's incontinent. Even though she's very much a special needs kitty, Gracie is one of the sweetest pets we've ever been around. Hello Dolly!

We're making huge progress toward becoming a No Kill Community thanks to our adoption partners and foster families. Cats and dogs who would have been killed for space reasons in years past are now safely in the hands of volunteers. Dolly is one of those. She weighs only five pounds, but she's a heavyweight in the beauty department. She's very soft, but she's also very shy. A little patience will bring her out of her shell. She's available for adoption at one of our great adoption partners: Ridge Road Animal Hospital.

Ol' Blue Eyes

Ol' blue eyes is back! We think this cat should have been named Sinatra. One look at those baby blues, and you're sure to swoon. This kitty is not about to hang with the rat pack, though, because he's as sweet and loving as can be. He's got the world on a string. Jingles could use a little of your help. She's five years old and hasn't adjusted well in her nearly three months in the shelter. Fenton and Felicia are now available for adoption at the Rockwall Petco. Beginning last week, two of our cats are available for adoption at Petco every day. The previous two were adopted, so Fenton and Felicia took up temporary residence in the store this morning.

Join the Presley Fan Club

This friendly kitty has managed to fall between the cracks. Even though Presley is handsome and outgoing, he hasn't attracted much attention at the Rockwall Animal Adoption Center. He's declawed, neutered, up-to-date on all his shots and very gentle. What more does a cat have to do to attract attention? A big hunk o' love

This kitty may be a big bundle of love, but he can't catch a break. Snoopy's original owner passed away, then the next person gave him up, citing allergies.
